I got an email from art director Larry Williams that read, “When I say ‘Wireless Home,’ What comes to mind and can you do it by next friday?” I drew some sketches and the amazing Robin Finlay went to junk shops buying up old electronics. Robin built these two ‘Star Command - Home’ remote controls based on my sketches and we shot the hell out of them over a bottle of wine.

Now if only they worked!

Lennox – Heating and Cooling Campaign

Creative director Ralph Yznaga at GSD&M had a crazy idea and somehow managed to sell it to the client. Art buyer Shannon McMillan put him in touch with my studio and we got to work. We started with Ralph’s rough composites that the client signed off on. But creating these objects out of industrial air conditioners and furnaces required some serious planning. I created detailed perspective drawings of these scenarios using their product line and then planned how light would effect each object. When the massive AC units and furnaces got to the studio we had to take the door off of the hinges to fit everything inside. The parts were lit individually and the appropriate shadows were cast on them so when I put all of the parts together in Photoshop everything looked natural. Easy peasy!

Spirit Magazine Sandwich Feature

My homies at Spirit magazine were looking for an excuse to have us make an exploded image for them. Along came a Sandwich package. Problem solved. We worked with the people from ‘Wichcraft’ in New York who coached us in making the perfect BLT. And pounds and pounds of fancy deli meats showed up at my studio. Our assistant Bill ate well that night.

Texas Monthly – Charter School Story

This was an emergency. Texas Monthly called us in need of an opener for a story on charter schools and needed it in just two days. Day one, Robin Finlay found all of these props (and tons more) and we built a vintage classroom set in the studio. Day two, we shot it and sent it off in record time. Then Caleb Bennett made a groovy intro design and finito! A winner is me!

Bite – Texas Monthly ‘Road Food’ outtakes

I was shooting some food for Texas Monthly last week and decided to give them some extra options. Poor Lindsay from The Butler Brothers stopped by to pick up some prints and ended up with a giant camera in her face. I pretty much grabbed any poor soul that wandered into my studio and exploited them. Here are the exploits.

Typography With Seeds

We were approached to create a cover for a seed manufacturer’s (no not Monsanto) quarterly publication. At some point, someone mentioned a type cover, and we love type! So my brilliant stylist Robin made some options and we ended up with these two final images. We like type.

Father’s Day Megga Hammer Ad

This ad ran in Sports Illustrated for Ace Hardware. It’s for an Auto Hammer. I want one. We pounded all of these nails into this plywood by hand. I have a nail gun, but nail guns don’t use pretty nails. So if anyone wants to send me an auto hammer you can find my studio address on my contact page.

Texas Monthly – Weird Science

This feature was shot for Texas Monthly, and designed by art director Andi Beierman. The images are from a small protfolio Robin Finlay & I created based on the story by Michael Hall challenging the legitimacy of many forensic practices. The story touches on many people who were wrongly convicted based on shady ’science’ and later exonerated. Heavy stuff!

It’s Nice That Issue #3

Despite a sky full of volcanic ash my copy of ‘It’s Nice That Issue #3′ arrived from the UK last week. It’s a great looking book featuring the likes of illustrator Charley Harper and legendary designer Milton Glaser. The paper-stock is pulpy and slightly yellow gray, but heavy. And the printing is impressive, strong blacks and vivid colors. It’s Nice That is a beautiful unique book, I’m flattered to be included.
